Discover over 1,100 years of British History and the fascinating processes of coin making at The Royal Mint Experience, located in South Wales, just off the M4.
Since opening in 2016, The Royal Mint Experience has quickly become one of the must-do attractions in South Wales. From award winning tours and exhibitions to extraoardinary events, this is an experience curious minds of all ages can enjoy.
Please allow 45 minutes for your tour. After the tour, you can explore our exhibition at your own pace and enjoy winding down in our on-site cafe. We usually recommend allowing 2 hours for the whole experience.
What's on the tour?
During your tour, your friendly and engaging tour guide will offer more information about:
- The rich history of The Royal Mint: From London to Llantrisant, The Royal Mint has been the original maker of coins for the monarchy since Alfred the Great in the 880s!
- Circulating coins: Discover how these coins are designed, made and distributed. Take an exclusive look at our Coin Press Room, the only place in the world where you can see circulating coins made for the UK.
- Commemorative coins: Learn how these are made diffrently to circulating coins. You'll even have the option to Strike Your Own!
- Pioneering Projects: The Royal Mint don't just make coins for the nation! From medals to medical visors, The Royal Mint have adapted over the years to meet changing societal needs.
Please note, on occasions when the Circulating Coin Factory is not in operation; guests have the unique opportunity to step onto the factory floor and come face to face with the state-of-the-art machines that make every circulating coin for the UK.
Toilet facilities are available before and after the tour, but not during the tour in factory areas. We encourage all guests to make use of the facilities before their tour departs.
Strike Your Own Coin
To add an extra-special moment to your visit, you can ‘Strike Your Own Coin’ whilst on tour, a unique offering available only at The Royal Mint Experience. The coin design you can strike changes regularly, reflecting a current theme, event or anniversary.
This is an optional experience that can be added at the additional cost of £7.50 per coin struck. No pre-booking is required to Strike Your Own Coin, the team will ask on arrival if this is something you would like to do during your tour.

- Please allow 45 minutes for this tour and an additional 30 minutes afterwards in our exhibition.
- The use of cameras and recording equiptment are prohibited in most areas of the tour. Please follow your guide's instructions and ask if unsure.

The great British tradition of afternoon tea has long been a favourite amongst the nation. Once enjoyed by high society and a particular favourite of Queen Victoria, today it is enjoyed by people coming together to socialise and enjoy delicious treats while drinking tea. As a great British institution, it is fitting that The Royal Mint offers you a luxurious afternoon tea at The Royal Mint Experience.
We run two afternoon tea and patisserie platter sittings each day at 12pm and 2pm. Please note we require 48 hours notice for standard afternoon teas and afternoon teas. We require 72 hours notice for our Vegan afternoon tea or patisserie platter.
